1
People Still Come First

Technology, AI, financial results and process improvements were all part of our conversation, but a consistent message was that people remain at the center of sustainable success. Joe emphasized that every organization operates through people, process and technology, but people come first because they are the ones who must align around a common purpose and execute. John shared how deliberately investing in culture, relationships and trust helped A1 Roofing grow from a small family operation to approximately 150 employees. Ellen reinforced the simplest version of the lesson: get to know people, understand what matters to them and demonstrate that you care.

2
Look Beyond the Numbers

One of my favorite themes from the discussion was that the numbers tell a story, but leaders need to understand what is creating that story. Ellen gave several examples on investments vs. decisions. Joe challenged finance professionals to think of themselves as business leaders first and functional experts second. That requires curiosity: understanding the enterprise, its people, its customers and the underlying drivers of performance rather than simply reporting what happened.

3
Execution Separates Intention from Results

Great ideas, strategies, mission statements and goals accomplish very little unless an organization develops the discipline to execute them. John described how A1 Roofing uses effective meetings, scorecards, accountability, clearly defined goals and regular one-on-one conversations to translate intentions into measurable action. Ellen described this as the “knowing-doing gap”: knowing what should be done is very different from actually doing it. Successful organizations create routines that make accountability visible and ensure that meetings lead to decisions and action rather than simply more discussion.

4
Stay Humble and Keep Learning

Some of the most powerful stories involved successful leaders recognizing that they did not have all the answers. John described deliberately surrounding himself with people who were more experienced and successful, reading constantly and seeking out peer organizations where he could learn. Joe shared memorable moments when senior leaders challenged his own growing confidence and reminded him of the importance of “humble confidence.” He also encouraged people to seek mentors outside their own functional disciplines because a different perspective can often teach us more than another person who thinks exactly as we do. Leadership growth requires curiosity, humility and a willingness to remain a student throughout your career.

5
Growth Happens Outside Our Comfort Zones

Growth often begins when we are willing to do something unfamiliar, take a thoughtful risk, learn from a setback or enter a room where we are not the expert. John’s story of moving beyond the practices of a traditional small roofing business, Joe’s lessons from mentors and Ellen’s work helping leaders navigate change all pointed toward the same conclusion: what got us here will not necessarily get us where we want to go next. Growth requires us to challenge comfortable assumptions and sometimes act before we feel completely ready. The goal isn’t recklessness; it is developing the confidence and humility to move forward despite some discomfort.

And Ellen captured that final thought perfectly at the end of our session:

“Everything you want is outside your comfort zone.”

Her follow-up was equally important: it isn’t going to feel comfortable, so sometimes you simply have to do it anyway.
